Situation

Our client, a large mining and processing operation owned by a leading metals company, faced a shortage of workers in blue-collar roles and expected the problem to worsen. One of the main reasons was the limited appeal of these jobs because of high exposure to occupational health hazards and arduous working conditions. The company engaged our team to develop a programme of initiatives to improve working conditions, reduce exposure to occupational health hazards and strengthen the appeal of its employer brand.

What we did

  • Conducted a comprehensive assessment of working conditions at the operation.
  • Planned improvements to working conditions for 60% of employees through equipment upgrades at the mining and processing operation.
  • Developed a methodology for designing initiatives, enabling the programme to be rolled out to other production sites.

Results

  • 315 initiatives in the approved programme, covering all 210 occupations and 4,000+ staff positions.
