Shortages of skilled personnel, intense competition for talent in the regions and low employee engagement undermine operational efficiency and make change harder to implement.
Employers need to improve working conditions and reduce occupational hazards to attract and retain people. This includes improving conditions at mining and metallurgical operations, developing comprehensive programmes and bringing working conditions across a substantial share of occupations into the safe category.
Without a central project management office and clear initiative priorities, operational improvement programmes fail to offset margin pressure or protect market share in key markets.
